The Home of Some Amazing Malts
A few things that make Islay distinctive:
Islay is world-renowned for smoky single malts. Distilleries like Laphroaig Distillery, Lagavulin Distillery, and Ardbeg Distillery produce whiskies with intense flavours often described as smoky, medicinal, maritime, or salty.
The island has wide sandy beaches, rolling hills, sea cliffs, and large peat moors. It’s an important habitat for birds, especially during migration seasons. You can spot geese, eagles, otters, and seals around the coast.
Islay has deep Gaelic roots and was once the centre of the medieval Lordship of the Isles. You’ll still hear Scottish Gaelic spoken by some residents.
Only around 3,000 people live there year-round, and life moves slowly compared with mainland Scotland. The main villages are Bowmore, Port Ellen, and Port Charlotte.
One of the best-known annual events is the Fèis Ìle, a whisky and music festival that draws enthusiasts from around the world each spring.

Our adventures at Port Ellen; Islay is a regular destination for To infinity. We spent some fab time here with Nick Nairn and Paul Rankin filming part of their series ”Great Scottish Food Trip”. Although no cooking was done by either of these fine chefs, it was an absolute laugh. We explored the stunning coastline together, soaking in the breathtaking views and sharing plenty of stories and banter. The atmosphere on set (yes To Infinity becme the set) was relaxed and cheerful, making it a truly memorable experience for everyone involved. Including the necessary photo of the guys in front of Lagavulin Distillery.
